Escape to the islands with the new Animal Crossing: New Horizons
First of all, I want to ask how you are doing. We sincerely hope that you and your loved ones are healthy and safe. My boys have been home since Friday, March 20th. Luckily they have had enrichment activities to do from the school district. It doesn’t take them long to finish their daily work. So keeping them entertained has been a bit hard.
We were lucky to have received a copy of Animal Crossing: New Horizons for our Nintendo Switch. My boys have been looking forward to this game since it was announced by Nintendo. So you can imagine the excitement at our house when this game arrived.
My boys have always been fans of Animal Crossing thanks to the New Leaf game in the series. New Horizons is definitely a step forward in the Animal Crossing series. When you start this game you get to create your character. Then you are taken to a deserted island and joined by two random animals, who will be your first neighbors. After a brief introduction by Tom Nook, you’re named “Resident Representative” and sent out to find the perfect location for your new home. Tom Nook gets you started by providing the supplies you’ll need to get going, for a fee that you’ll have to pay back to him over time. If you aren’t sure what to do next, he also offers guidance for new players.
There is an extremely high amount of things to do. Fish, talk to villagers, shop for items for your character, etc. Animal Crossing: New Horizons manages to bring all the features from New Leaf, make them better, and add a whole lot of new stuff! The graphics are great and the characters are adorable.
Your most useful tool on the island is the Nook Phone that you’ll use to do everything from taking pictures with the Camera, customize your player Passport, view your island Map, and even a Rescue Service in case you get lost. It is also how you manage your friends list, assign Best Friends, and keep track of your DIY Recipes and Critters you’ve caught. Much like our real smartphones, it does a lot.
My boys also like that they can visit your friends’ islands to share goods or just talk to different villagers. Four players can hang out on the same island locally, and up to eight can gather online. So it’s easy for them to socialize with their friends even while social distancing.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons plays out over the course of real-world time, and depending on which hemisphere you select in the beginning, seasons will change based on where you actually are. Unless you want to purposefully make it different from your real surroundings, the game will evolve as the year goes on. My youngest likes this the most!
We also like that there are seasonal events. It’s these events and holidays that will change up the playing experience, so there’s always a reason to come back on the island. If you want to cheat, you can always adjust the date and time in your Nintendo Switch’s clock. But we don’t recommend it since its more fun if you don’t and let everything happen naturally.
The biggest part of the game that we loved is that there is no end to the fun. If you truly want to experience everything that New Horizons has to offer you have to be in it for the long haul. What’s great is that this game makes it so much fun! As a parent, I like that there isn’t any vulgar language or violence. I also like that the game can also be educational at times, teaching players about debt, and how to manage money.
We definitely recommend this game to everyone! As it’s lots of fun for any age. So don’t wait any longer and plan your island getaway with Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

I’m clueless about this new game, lol. My nephews will no doubt explain it to me! It looks like a fun one.
It is super fun! So fun in fact that I ended up getting my own Switch and game because I had taken over theirs. 🙂
