This is even more beautiful in person than the pictures show. I love using it to grind spices. Here are a few tips of how I use them. Many dried herbs and spices grind more easily if you add a little salt into mix, as this provides a large mass to work with. With round things like peppercorns or dried berries (allspice, juniper), cover the top with your hand and gently crack them by using the pestle in the space between your thumb and first finger. Once cracked, they are much easier to grind. It’s important that you grind, not pound, the contents. Use the bowl and apply pressure in a circular motion. It’s fine to clean out the bowl without immersing the whole mortar in water. Use a dry towel to remove residue, wash the bowl using warm water and dry.

I really like the way it was made. It’s very heavy, good quality and it works well. The only thing I would change about it is that it would be nice for it to be taller. But that is the only thing.
