Nochebuena Chit Chat

Talking about my Nochebuena traditions.

With Christmas around the corner I think it’s time for me to start thinking about the menu. We usually do a mix between our traditional Guatemalan dishes. Like tamales, a fruit punch that we serve warm (it’s more like a cider than a fruit punch) made with raisins, apples, plums and cinnamon. Hot chocolate and a pork shoulder for example. Along with a few traditional American dishes like Turkey, gravy and mashed potatoes.

We get together Christmas Eve (which we call Nochebuena) and celebrate all night. At midnight we wish each other a Merry Christmas and everyone sits around the Christmas Tree. Then we place the baby Jesus in the Nativity and give thanks for the many blessing we have had throughout the year. Next we all get to open presents! As always this is the favorite part for the kiddos.

What are your traditions during the holidays?
