Maddie

Have you read Maddi’s Fridge?

Now a days it’s hard to teach kids the very real need that some kids unfairly have to face. In this book Maddi explains to Sofia why her fridge only has a carton of milk. Did you know that one out of every five kids in the United States is at risk of having an empty fridge like Maddi? It’s heart breaking, yet it’s a reality.

But this story is so much more than a story about child hunger. It’s a wonderful story about the importance of friendship, and that kids CAN make a difference. Sofia and Maddi play in the same park. They live in the same neighborhood. They are the best of friends. Sofia realizes that there is no food at Maddi’s house, and Maddi makes her promise not to tell. Sofia is surprised to find out her friend’s family can’t afford food, and isn’t sure what to do. But she knows she has to do SOMETHING, so she tries to help Maddi solve this problem by herself. This leads to many adventures for the two friends. I don’t want to share too much as I wouldn’t want to spoil this wonderful book. I do want to say however that this is definitely a great read, and one worth reading.

Lois Brandt has done an excellent job of making the message of child hunger in America relatable for even very small children. Vin Vogel‘s illustrations are enticing, detailed, and colorful. They give a sense of emotion and of movement that create a feeling of connection to the characters. The illustrations made me feel like I knew the neighborhood. But my favorite thing about this book has got to be that 10% of the profits are donated to fight childhood hunger!  You can purchase this book at your local independent book store, Barnes & Noble and of course Amazon.
