The fear of intimacy is the fear of being emotionally and physically close to another individual. Fear of intimacy is the expression of existential views in that to love and to be loved makes life seem precious and death more inevitable. It often results from past traumas such as rape or child sexual abuse. Fear of intimacy is also related to the fear of being touched.

The Tango is one of the most fascinating of all dances. It’s a sensual ballroom dance that originated in South America in the early twentieth century. Originally, the tango was performed only by women, but once it spread into Argentina, it developed into a dance for couples. The popularity of the tango has greatly increased over the years. Argentine Tango is much more intimate than Modern Tango, and is well-suited to dancing in small settings. Argentine Tango retains the intimacy of the original dance.

After reading the two previous paragraphs, you’re probably wondering why two things that are complete opposites… Fear of intimacy and Tango… Are in the same post.

I was contacted by Perri Iezzoni with the opportunity to review his book “Fear of Intimacy and the Tango Cure”. I was intrigued from the get go, mainly because I wanted to know how two complete opposites would come together. This is a very well written story that bares the heart and soul of a man and his journey in overcoming his fear of intimacy and self awareness.  Once I started reading I couldn’t put it down.  It is a short read book, yet it is filled with passion, heart, and it’s told in such a way that you feel like you are there witnessing the story. The author takes his deepest secrets, and shares them with you, he developed his own method for recovery, and reveals many interesting drivers behind intimacy issues that has opened my eyes to my behaviors and those of my loved ones.  This book sheds light on behavior that many think is normal and healthy, and explains how it is not.

In this book I learned that, intimacy itself  isn’t actually what people fear. If people could be guaranteed that intimacy would be a positive experience, they would have no fear of it. What people fear is the possibility of getting hurt as a result of being intimate with another. The struggle for intimacy is a complex issue. It’s the key to the happiness of every man and woman. It goes on for all of us as long as we live. To be intimate is to be close, to be vulnerable, qualities that are very different from the survival skills we learned. Acquiring intimacy skills can be difficult, but through understanding and effort, they can be learned. This insightful book is a good place to begin.

I have never really been a fan of Tango.  I always thought that the Tango dance was boring, long, and tiring.  This book however has really opened my eyes to the real beauty that is Tango. Perri’s insights will give you a deeper appreciation for the heritage, and sensuality of the tango. This book shows us a fascinating and important exploration of the critical role of strong follower-ship (alongside Leadership) that can be used in all areas of life. The author makes a convincing case that our reality IS what we give our attention to. It’s a great reminder to deliberately create not only our dance, but also our entire life experience!

Whether or not you are experiencing a fear of intimacy, or are unsure on where the fear stems from and what you can do to overcome it. This book will help you understand where that fear may come from and for tips on overcoming the fear.  I enjoyed this book and highly recommend it.
