Health Is On The Fritz…Again

Health is on the fritz...again

My health has been on the fritz for weeks, here’s what I’ve found out…

If you guys caught vlog or read my last post about it then you know that for the last couple weeks my health has been on the fritz. It had been at least a month before it started acting up again. It started about a couple weeks ago with a mild back ache and then a headache that turned migraine. Both pains have lasted about two weeks.

On Monday the 29th of February I went to the emergency room because my doctor could not get me in until the 11th of March. When I got there at 4 pm it was packed! My hunny drove me there so of course the boys were with us too. It has been even harder for us when I get sick since my mom is living at my sister’s house. After waiting for 5 hours it was 9 pm and past the boys bedtime so I decided that we should leave. I was still in pain but my boys really needed to get to bed.  Having them is really what gets me through the day. I know I have to push through my days for them and that’s what keeps me going.

My migraines got worse on the weekend and so did the back pain. So on Monday this week (3/7) I called the doctor and asked to move my appointment up a few days. Because of my visit to the ER last week she fit me in. After telling her my symptoms she thought that the pain in my back could be a kidney stone. So she sent me back to the ER. Luckily my mom was with me so she dropped me off at the ER and headed back home with my little guy. She picked up the boys for me and I called my hunny to let him know where I was and to ask him to stop for me on his way home.

In the ER they did everything… CT scan, blood work, they put in an IV, poked and prodded. In the end I was told that the back pain was elevating my blood pressure and high blood pressure was causing my migraines. So the question here is “What is causing my back pain?”. Well your guess is as good as mine. Yup, they diagnosed it as unspecified pain.

They gave me pain medication which of course I am not taking because I don’t like taking medication unless I truly have to. Especially when I don’t know what is causing the pain. I feel like I need to treat the cause and not the pain. So here I am back at square one. I went back to my doctor today and she decided that it is a good idea to take blood pressure medication to maintain my blood pressure low and that way not get these pesky migraines. I got the prescription filled but I don’t know whether to take it or not. What if I take it and then I can’t get off of it. I did ask my doctor this and she did say not to worry about it but I don’t know…

So this is where I stand at the moment…should I or shouldn’t I take the high blood pressure medication?

As a layman with blood pressure close to your norm, I would take the blood pressure meds, at least temporarily, to get your blood pressure down and lose the migraines!! I lived with a TMJ headache for 6 months before I had surgery and know just how awful that kind of pain is to live with. I pray you find the reason for the back pain and you can get that fixed immediately!!

I am a retired nurse and if the high blood pressure is giving you migraines then you really should take the blood pressure med. It will make you feel a lot better in the long run. You might feel a little tired until your body gets used to the med for the first week. High blood pressure is not something you want to leave untreated. It will make finding the underlying reason for your back pain less stressful for you.

Thank you for your comment Sherry, I really appreciate it. I don’t normally suffer from High Blood Pressure, actually it has always been on the low end 107/74 is my usual. That’s why it scares me now to take the pressure medicine. I realize that right now it’s been high because of the pain, I just don’t want it to remain high because of the medication after the pain has been resolved (if that ever happens). I honestly can’t take these migraines any more so I am seriously considering taking it.

I am a chronic intractable pain patient of 40 yrs. You are correct in not taking the pain med, especially if it is narcotic without a diagnosis. As for the blood pressure med, it would be safe in my layman’s opinion if you monitor your blood pressure. You don’t need low pressure and start passing out!!!! You need to see a pain specialist for your back UNLESS your doctor thinks it is a kidney stone. In that case, why didn’t they do a scan on your kidney?? Good luck!!

I will definitely be asking for a scan and if there’s still nothing, I will ask for a referral to a pain specialist. Thanks for your comment Ann. 🙂
